The basics you need to know about power capacitors

Rated parameters of power capacitors
1. Rated voltage
The rated voltage of the reactive power compensation capacitor is the normal working voltage specified in the design and manufacture, which is not affected by any factors. In general, the rated voltage of the power capacitor is higher than the rated voltage of the power system connected.
In addition, in order to ensure the safety and stability of the power capacitor, it is not allowed to run under the condition of 1.1 times the excess constant voltage for a long time.
2. Rated current
Rated current, the current operating at rated voltage, is also determined from the very beginning of design and manufacture. Reactive power compensation capacitors are allowed to operate at rated current for a long time. The maximum current allowed to operate is 130% of rated current, otherwise the capacitor bank will fail.
In addition, the three phase current difference of the three phase capacitor bank must be less than 5% of the rated current.
3. Rated frequency
The rated frequency can be simply understood as the theoretical frequency. The rated frequency of the power capacitor must be consistent with the frequency connected to the power grid, otherwise the operating current will be different from the rated current, which will cause a series of problems.
Because the reactance of power capacitors is inversely proportional to frequency, high frequency and low current will cause insufficient capacitor power, and low frequency and high current will cause overload operation of the capacitor, which cannot play a normal compensation role.
